As spring is underway, we can look forward to enjoying the outdoors. Picnics, barbequing, gardening and taking walks are just some of the things to enjoy as the weather heats up. Unfortunately, the beginning of spring also means the end of hibernation for pests.

Ants are just one of the pests that will be waking up and searching for food. The last thing you want is to unknowingly house a colony of ants. Keep reading for tips on how to keep ants out of your home this spring!

Keep the Kitchen Clean

Spills and crumbs attract ants into your kitchen. If left for a long time, more and more ants will pick up on the scent and enter your home in search of the source.

Forming a neat, single-file line, they track down the food debris and before you know it, they’re scattered across the floor, countertops and walls. Maintaining a clean kitchen space is a sure-fire way to keep ants at bay.

Use Scents That Drive Ants Away

Another approach to keeping ants away is using scents throughout your home that ward off ants. Cut up lemon and orange slices and use the leftover rinds for a DIY spray.

Or, consider using citrus-scented cleaning products, as ants are averse to these fragrances. While sugar attracts these tiny pests, pepper and salt also work as deterrents.

Store all Food Properly

Not only do food crumbs and debris get the attention of ants, but so will your dinner leftovers. After meals and snacks, be sure to store all food in air-tight containers.

Do not keep pet food out—especially if it’s canned. Leaving empty food cans out overnight will also attract ants. Make sure to thoroughly clean up after meals and put a lid on leftovers!

Keep up With Home Repairs

As ants are very small, they can fit into through the smallest cracks and crevices. If there are rips or tears in your window screens, they can crawl through.

Large gaps under doors or windows give them easy access to your home as well. Keeping ants out of your home entirely is easier said than done. But, if you keep your eyes peeled for potential entry points in your home and make minor repairs when necessary, it will greatly minimize their presence.
