What Kinds of Pests Will You Find in Connecticut?

Ants

There are three main types of ants commonly found in Connecticut:

Pavement ants
Carpenter ants
Little black Ants

Pavement ants have brown to black coloring. They typically nest underneath sidewalks, driveways or patios and decks. They enjoy sweet foods, which encourage them to nest near your foundation so they can easily sneak into your kitchen for food.

Carpenter ants have mostly black bodies, but it’s not unusual for them to have reddish or brown coloring too. Carpenter ants will burrow into any wood they can find to build their nests. Though they are not as destructive as termites, the holes they cause still aren’t something you want to deal with.

Little black ants are– you guessed it– small and black. These ants prefer living outdoors in crevices or woodwork, but they are still likely to invade your home’s interior in search of food or water.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes have a huge presence in Connecticut.

There is not much you can do to prevent them, but there are still some tips you can follow to avoid their itchy bites…

You should minimize how much time you spend outdoors, and apply mosquito-repellant spray as often as possible.

Try to avoid hanging out near pools of standing water near your home. Also empty any containers that can support the breeding of mosquitoes as soon as you find them.

Rodents

Rats and mice are just two of Connecticut’s many types of rodents.

You can usually find them in or around certain areas of your home. This includes your roof, attic, cellar and cupboards. These unwelcome pests also love calling the insides of your walls home, given the chance.

Rats and mice are very opportunistic, so avoid letting food fall on the floor or letting the trash get too full. (That goes for your trash or trash receptacles both inside and outside.)
