Don't Bring Bed Bugs Back from Your Summer Vacation

It's summertime again, and that can only mean one thing: vacation time! It's a good time of year when families everywhere pack up their cars and head down the road for fun in a new location. It's not a vacation without booking a stay at a hotel, which could lead to problems in the future. If you stay at a bed bug-infested hotel, it will make your life miserable when you get back home. If bed bugs have hitched a ride on your vacation, ABC Exterminating wants to help.

Picking Up Bed Bugs During Your Travels

Hotels do a lot to keep their rooms free of pests, especially blood-sucking, profit-killing bed bugs. Unfortunately, these pests stay under the radar and know how to keep hidden from people during the day. When night falls, it's another story altogether as they climb out from beneath the sheets and feed on your blood.

Where to Find Bed Bugs While on Vacation

No one wants to find bed bugs when vacationing, but it's important to find them before they find you. There's always a risk of picking up these pests while staying at an unfamiliar place like a hotel, a bed, and breakfast or a hostel. Bed bugs are great at hitchhiking on luggage and clothing, so it's easy for people to bring them into a hotel room and not even know it. You may also encounter these pests on public transportation such as buses and cabs and then transfer them to your hotel room or home.

How to Prevent Bed Bugs

Performing a bed bug check in your hotel room is very important. After all, they will cling to your luggage as you set it down and hitch a ride back to your house without your knowledge. It's best to check the hotel bed for bugs beneath the sheets, under the mattresses and within the recesses of the furniture. You should also check along the baseboards, behind the night tables, and around any picture frames on the walls.

Check every inch of the room before bringing your luggage inside. When you return home, leave your luggage outside as a precaution. Bring your clothing inside, and put it directly into the washing machine. Use a hot wash cycle to kill any bed bugs that may have come home with you.
