Are Venomous Spiders a Danger to Your Pets?

Whether you are a cat person, a dog person, a bird person, or some other special variety of pet person, there's no denying that you cherish your pets as you do your own family--perhaps even more so! Because you cherish your pets, you want to keep them safe from anything that might harm them, including venomous spiders such as the Black Widow and the Brown Recluse. Are such spiders really a danger to pets?

Are Venomous Spiders a Danger to Your Pets?

The short answer is yes. In fact, because most household pets are relatively small, they are even more strongly affected by spider bites than humans are. Because of that, they should be kept away from Black Widows, Brown Recluse, Hobo Spiders, and Tarantulas.

According to the experts over at Vet Street, you can mitigate the danger by taking several steps. First always keep a friendly distance from spiders when you encounter them out of doors. Small animals like to play with insects, but in the case of poisonous one, this just courts disaster. Two, always shake out blankets or towels well before using them around your cat or dog. Three, do what you can to cut down on the spider population inside your home: dust, vacuum, and de-clutter.

One of the best defenses against spiders, of course, is to have your home regularly treated by a pest control professional. Knowing that the experts are doing all that they can to keep your home spider-free can give you great peace of mind.
