Termite Control in Fairfield County, CTTermite - 3

Termite Information

The most destructive termite species in Connecticut is the eastern subterranean termite. These termites live in colonies that are mostly populated by worker termites. Worker termites grow to be around an eighth of an inch in length and are tasked with collecting food for the rest of the colony. Colonies are defended by soldiers, and one or more queens lay eggs to produce more termites. Termite queens can live for several decades and produce 2,000 eggs per day, and a mature termite colony can house millions of workers.

Damage Caused by Termites

Termites feed on cellulose, an important structural compound that keeps trees and other plants rigid and strong. If termites infest your home, they will quickly begin stripping wooden construction materials and furniture of this compound, rendering them weak and structurally unsound. Termite workers feed day and night, and a large colony can destroy several pounds of wood each week.

Identifying an Infestation

When termite colonies grow too large, winged reproductive termites take to the air to search for a suitable site for a new colony. If a swarm of termites chooses your property, you may be able to spot these reproductive termites during daylight hours. Once the termites settle in, they will be more difficult to find as they rarely venture above the surface of the soil. Keep an eye out for networks of muddy tunnels as well as frass, the termites' sawdust-like droppings.
